Manual Handling Policy Statement

Esgil recognises that manual handling can lead to injuries and ill health to staff and others who may be affected by their undertakings. This policy sets out the arrangements that Esgil have in place to meet the requirements of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended) and to ensure the health and safety of their staff, partners and subcontractors who may be required to carry out manual handling operations on host sites.
Application
This policy applies to all manual handling operations carried out by Ewell Systems’ staff, partners and subcontractors working on host sites.
All Esgil staff  who may work on host sites are aware this policy and are expected to adhere to the requirements of the policy  when carrying out manual handling operations in that location.
Where Esgil partners or subcontractors are required to work on hosts sites they will be provided with a copy of this policy and will be required to comply with the requirements of the policy.
Policy
Where reasonably practicable all equipment will be moved using the mechanical equipment provided by the host site.
Where moving plant or machinery using mechanical equipment is not reasonably practicable an assessment of the risks will be carried out before the equipment is moved. The assessment will take into account
• The task
• The load
• The working environment
• Individual capability
• Other factors, for example, the need to wear protective clothing
• The distances through which the load is to be moved.

Any control measures identified by the risk assessment must be implemented before the manual handling work is undertaken.
Where manual handling cannot be avoided the basic guideline figures on weights for manual handling operations involving lifting and lowering should be taken into account when carrying out the risk assessment.  These assume that:
• The load is readily grasped in both hands;
• The operation takes place in reasonable working conditions;
• The operator in a stable body position;
• The lifting operations are relatively infrequent.
Responsibility
To ensure the effectiveness of this policy Ewell Systems’ staff, partners and subcontractors working on Host sites are required to:
• Comply with the requirements of this policy as set out above
• Use any personal protective equipment identified by the risk assessment
• Follow local safe systems of work when using the Host site’s mechanical lifting or other equipment
• Report any accidents, near misses or unsafe conditions that occur on site to the manager in charge of the site at the time.
